RESUMO

Retroperitoneal fibrosis, a rare and often idiopathic condition, poses significant diagnostic challenges. While most cases are considered idiopathic or immune-mediated, a small but important proportion are associated with malignant neoplasms, with implications for prognosis and management. The present study describes the case of a 69-year-old man who presented to the emergency department of the Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital (Granada, Spain), with a 2-week history of epigastric pain, vomiting and altered bowel habits. Laboratory investigations revealed previously undiagnosed renal insufficiency. An abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan showed extensive diffuse retroperitoneal infiltration extending from the periduodenal region to the pubic bone, resulting in gastric dilatation and hydronephrosis. A CT-guided retroperitoneal biopsy was performed and pathology confirmed the presence of urothelial carcinoma. This diagnosis led to the initiation of a chemotherapy regimen consisting of carboplatin and gemcitabine specifically designed for urothelial carcinoma. A follow-up 18F-FDG PET scan performed 6 months later showed a partial functional response. This case illustrates a rare presentation of urothelial carcinoma masked by extensive retroperitoneal fibrosis, and highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis in reducing tumor burden and improving the clinical status of patients.

Bioaccumulation patterns of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, Fe and Cu) and organic (priority and emerging) pollutants, in combination with stable isotope analysis (SIA), were assessed in muscle and liver of three tuna species from the Gulf of Cadiz (Atlantic bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus; Atlantic bonito, Sarda sarda, and skipjack tuna, Katsuwonus pelamis). SIA and contaminant (heavy metal and organic) profiles separately discriminated between species. There was no significant overlap between the trophic niches estimated from isotopic data, suggesting that there are diet differences which may determine differential bioaccumulation patterns. The levels of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants in muscle of all the individuals analyzed were below the allowable limits established by the current legislation. Concentrations of most contaminants were higher in liver than in muscle, underlining the powerful detoxifying capacity of the liver in tunas. In addition to diet, other factors such as size and age (exposure time to environmental chemicals) explain differences in pollutant accumulation patterns in tissues between species, each with varying degrees of involvement depending on the pollutant class. Our results show that combining contaminant profile data with trophic features based on SIA may help understand pollutant bioaccumulation patterns in upper levels of marine food webs.

The Cucurbita genus has been widely used in traditional medicinal systems across different countries. In this study, we aimed to investigate the chemical composition, antioxidant properties, enzyme inhibitory, and cytotoxic effects of methanol and aqueous extracts obtained from the aerial parts, seeds, and fruit shells of Cucurbita okeechobeensis. Antioxidant properties were assessed using various chemical methods, including radical quenching (DPPH and ABTS), reducing power (CUPRAC and FRAP), metal chelation, and phosphomolybdenum assays. The extracts' enzyme inhibitory effects were tested against cholinesterase, amylase, glucosidase, and tyrosinase, whereas different cancer cell lines were used for the cytotoxicity study. The chemical composition, evaluated by HPLC-ESI-MSn , showed that the most abundant compounds were flavonoids (mainly quercetin glycosides) followed by phenolic acids (mostly caffeic acid derivatives). The aerial parts displayed stronger antioxidant ability than the seed and fruit shells, in agreement with the highest content in phytochemicals. In addition, the methanol extracts presented the highest bioactivity and content in phytochemicals; among them, the extract of the aerial part exhibited significant cytotoxic effects on cancer cell lines and induced apoptosis. Overall, our results suggest that C. okeechobeensis is a valuable source of bioactive compounds for the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries.

BACKGROUND: Two quantitative models for myopia have been proposed and used for myopic intervention, one derived from feedback theory, and the other from physiological and mechanical considerations. This paper shows that they both predict the same results indicating that they are valid and reliable. These models are the only ones that can make predictions about the effect of atropine and lenses on myopia, explain multiple observations heretofore unexplained and offer possible interventions. OBJECTIVE: Using their predictive power we test the models by calculating and comparing the effect of accommodation, lenses or atropine. The models offer a rationale that makes atropine equivalent to a positive lens for purposes of refractive development. METHODS: This report includes thought experiments, actual experiments and trials, as well as an analysis of clinical data and integrates and tests results from all of them for far-reaching conclusions. RESULTS: Both models accurately predict the same myopia progression caused by near work. These models are simple but powerful enough to suggest what treatments are indicated. Interventions for prevention and control of myopia are evaluated analytically, in particular atropine and optical treatments, such as positive lenses and under correction. CONCLUSION: Optical treatments have enormous potential; atropine is of questionable value since there are ways to get the same or superior effect with lenses of power calculated as described here.

We propose a modification of terbium-sensitized luminescence (TSL) by means of the introduction of nanoparticles to improve the sensitivity and selectivity of the analytical methods. TSL detection is usually based on the complexation between fluorescent organic compounds (the analytes) and terbium. The organic compound is then excited, and, after an energy transfer towards terbium, the latter emits the luminescence signal. Here, the modification consists of the introduction of nanoparticles (carbon quantum dots, CQDs) into the system. The carboxylic groups of CQDs react with terbium, providing an interesting time-resolved luminescence probe. We applied this system for the determination of the neonicotinoid imidacloprid (IMID). When IMID was introduced in the terbium-CQDs system, the luminescent signal (λexc/λem of 256/545 nm) was quenched, proportionally to IMID concentration in the range of 100-2500 ng·mL-1, obtaining a limit of detection of 30 ng·mL-1. A method detection limit of 0.9 mg·kg-1 was reached in caneberries, thus complying with the maximum residue level of 5 mg·kg-1 established by Codex Alimentarius. We performed recovery experiments in caneberries (blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, and mulberries), obtaining recovery yields close to 100% in all cases. These results show that the use of terbium ions-nanoparticles luminescence probes can be useful for screening purposes in quality control laboratories.

BACKGROUND: The use of lutetium-177 (177Lu)-based radiopharmaceuticals in peptide receptor nuclear therapy is increasing, but so is the number of nuclear medicine workers exposed to higher levels of radiation. In recent years, [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE has begun to be widely used for the treatment of neuroendocrine tumours. However, there are few studies evaluating the occupational radiation exposure during its administration, and there are still some challenges that can result in higher doses to the staff, such as a lack of trained personnel or fully standardised procedures. In response, this study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of occupational doses to the staff involved in the administration of [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE. RESULTS: A total of 32 administrations of [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE (7.4 GBq/session) carried out by a physician and a nurse, were studied. In total, two physicians and four nurses were independently monitored with cumulative (passive) and/or real-time (active) dosemeters. Extremity, eye lens and whole-body doses were evaluated in terms of the dosimetric quantities Hp(0.07), Hp(3) and Hp(10), respectively. It was obtained that lead aprons reduced dose rates and whole-body doses by 71% and 69% for the physicians, respectively, and by 56% and 68% for the nurses. On average, normalised Hp(10) values of 0.65 ± 0.18 µSv/GBq were obtained with active dosimetry, which is generally consistent with passive dosemeters. For physicians, the median of the maximum normalised Hp(0.07) values was 41.5 µSv/GBq on the non-dominant hand and 45.2 µSv/GBq on the dominant hand. For nurses 15.4 µSv/GBq on the non-dominant and 13.9 µSv/GBq on the dominant hand. The ratio or correction factor between the maximum dose measured on the hand and the dose measured on the base of the middle/ring finger of the non-dominant hand resulted in a factor of 5/6 for the physicians and 3/4 for the nurses. Finally, maximum normalised Hp(3) doses resulted in 2.02 µSv/GBq for physicians and 1.76 µSv/GBq for nurses. CONCLUSIONS: If appropriate safety measures are taken, the administration of [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE is a safe procedure for workers. However, regular monitoring is recommended to ensure that the annual dose limits are not exceeded.

BACKGROUND: Selective internal radiation therapy with 90Y radioembolization aims to selectively irradiate liver tumours by administering radioactive microspheres under the theragnostic assumption that the pre-therapy injection of 99mTc labelled macroaggregated albumin (99mTc-MAA) provides an estimation of the 90Y microspheres biodistribution, which is not always the case. Due to the growing interest in theragnostic dosimetry for personalized radionuclide therapy, a robust relationship between the delivered and pre-treatment radiation absorbed doses is required. In this work, we aim to investigate the predictive value of absorbed dose metrics calculated from 99mTc-MAA (simulation) compared to those obtained from 90Y post-therapy SPECT/CT. RESULTS: A total of 79 patients were analysed. Pre- and post-therapy 3D-voxel dosimetry was calculated on 99mTc-MAA and 90Y SPECT/CT, respectively, based on Local Deposition Method. Mean absorbed dose, tumour-to-normal ratio, and absorbed dose distribution in terms of dose-volume histogram (DVH) metrics were obtained and compared for each volume of interest (VOI). Mann-Whitney U-test and Pearson's correlation coefficient were used to assess the correlation between both methods. The effect of the tumoral liver volume on the absorbed dose metrics was also investigated. Strong correlation was found between simulation and therapy mean absorbed doses for all VOIs, although simulation tended to overestimate tumour absorbed doses by 26%. DVH metrics showed good correlation too, but significant differences were found for several metrics, mostly on non-tumoral liver. It was observed that the tumoral liver volume does not significantly affect the differences between simulation and therapy absorbed dose metrics. CONCLUSION: This study supports the strong correlation between absorbed dose metrics from simulation and therapy dosimetry based on 90Y SPECT/CT, highlighting the predictive ability of 99mTc-MAA, not only in terms of mean absorbed dose but also of the dose distribution.

Background: Retrospective studies suggest that coronavirus disease (COVID-19) commonly involves gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and complications. Our aim was to prospectively evaluate GI manifestations in patients hospitalized for COVID-19. Methods: This international multicentre prospective cohort study recruited COVID-19 patients hospitalized at 31 centres in Spain, Mexico, Chile, and Poland, between May and September 2020. Patients were followed-up until 15 days post-discharge and completed comprehensive questionnaires assessing GI symptoms and complications. A descriptive analysis as well as a bivariate and multivariate analysis were performer using binary logistic regression. p<0.05 was considered significant. Results: Eight hundred twenty-nine patients were enrolled; 129 (15.6%) had severe COVID-19, 113 (13.7%) required ICU admission, and 43 (5.2%) died. Upon admission, the most prevalent GI symptoms were anorexia (n=413; 49.8%), diarrhoea (n=327; 39.4%), nausea/vomiting (n=227; 27.4%), and abdominal pain (n=172; 20.7%), which were mild/moderate throughout the disease and resolved during follow-up. One-third of patients exhibited liver injury. Non-severe COVID-19 was associated with ≥2 GI symptoms upon admission (OR 0.679; 95% CI 0.464–0.995; p=0.046) or diarrhoea during hospitalization (OR 0.531; 95% CI 0.328–0.860; p=0.009). Multivariate analysis revealed that worse hospital outcomes were not independently associated with liver injury or GI symptoms. Conclusion: GI symptoms were more common than previously documented, and were mild, rapidly resolved, and not independently associated with COVID-19 severity. Liver injury was a frequent complication in hospitalized patients not independently associated with COVID-19 severity.


Antecedentes: Estudios retrospectivos evidencian que la enfermedad por coronavirus (COVID-19) conlleva síntomas y complicaciones gastrointestinales (GI). Nuestro objetivo fue evaluar prospectivamente las manifestaciones GI de pacientes hospitalizados por COVID-19. Métodos: Estudio internacional, multicéntrico, de cohorte, prospectivo, que seleccionó a pacientes con COVID-19 en 31 centros de España, México, Chile y Polonia, entre mayo-septiembre de 2020. Los pacientes fueron seguidos hasta 15 días tras el alta y completaron cuestionarios que evaluaban los síntomas y complicaciones GI. Se realizó un análisis descriptivo, bivariante y multivariante de los resultados. Se consideró significativa p<0,05. Resultados: Se incluyeron 829 pacientes; 129 (15,6%) presentaron COVID-19 grave, 113 (13,7%) requirieron ingreso en UCI y 43 (5,2%) fallecieron. Al ingreso, los síntomas GI más prevalentes fueron anorexia (n=413; 49,8%), diarrea (n=327; 39,4%), náuseas/vómitos (n=227; 27,4%) y dolor abdominal (n=172; 20,7%), que resultaron de intensidad leve/moderada y se resolvieron durante el seguimiento. Un tercio de los pacientes presentaron daño hepático. La COVID-19 no grave se asoció con la presencia de ≥2 síntomas GI al ingreso (OR 0,679; IC 95%: 0,464-0,995; p=0,046) y/o diarrea durante la hospitalización (OR 0,531; IC 95%: 0,328-0,860; p=0,009). El análisis multivariante reveló que los peores resultados hospitalarios no se asociaron de forma independiente con el daño hepático o los síntomas GI. Conclusión: Los síntomas GI fueron más frecuentes de lo que se había documentado, resultaron leves, se resolvieron rápidamente y no se asociaron de forma independiente con COVID-19 grave. El daño hepático fue una complicación frecuente en los pacientes hospitalizados que no se asoció de forma independiente con COVID-19 grave.(AU)

In 2006, the European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics (EFOMP) adopted the "Malaga Declaration". The declaration asserted the fundamental role of Medical Physics professionals in the radiation protection of patients, workers, general public, carers and comforters and research participants in hospitals. However, since that time the Medical Physics profession has evolved in Europe and new regulations and documentation have been issued, such as directive 2013/59/Euratom and the "European Guidelines on Medical Physics Expert" (RP174). EFOMP has published updated core-curricula and strived towards the recognition of the profession at the European level. In view of this, an update of the original Malaga Declaration was deemed necessary, to define the future vision that will guide the actions of the Federation in the years to come. This Declaration, which has been approved by the national member organizations of EFOMP in April 2023, is much broader than the original Malaga version. This is expected considering the rapid evolution of medical device technology over the last 17 years. The Radiation Protection Expert in hospital settings should be an MPE, since the latter has the highest level of radiation protection knowledge and training. Given the passion and energy that animated the debate, which led to the updating of the Malaga Declaration, we are confident that it represents a solid basis for the development of our profession in Europe which is in consonance with the aspirations of us all.

Dementia is a multifactorial disease in which environmental, lifestyle, and genetic factors intervene. Population studies have been used in looking for the susceptibility genes for this disease. Since the activity of dopamine b hydroxylase (DßH) is reduced in the hippocampus and neocortex in the brain, changes in the physiological status of dopamine have been reported in Alzheimer's disease (AD) induced by this enzyme. Therefore, DBH polymorphisms have been associated with susceptibility to some neurological diseases such as AD, but few studies have investigated the relationship between these polymorphisms with other types of dementia, especially in Mexican populations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the dopamine b-hydroxylase (DBH gene (rs1611115) and their interactions with environmental factors and the dementia risk. We examined the genotype of the gene DBH (rs1611115) polymorphism in patients with dementia and healthy. The interaction and the impact of DBH (rs1611115) polymorphism on dementia were examined through multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR) analysis, and the results were verified by the Chi-square test. Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) was also checked by the Chi-square test. The relative risk was expressed by odds ratio (OR) and 95%. A total of 221 dementia patients and 534 controls met the inclusion criteria of MDR analyses. The results of the MDR analysis showed that the development of dementia was positively correlated with interaction between the TT genotype of the DBH1 locus rs1611115 TT and diabetes, hypertension, and alcohol consumption (OR = 6.5: 95% CI = 4.5-9.5), originating further cognitive damage. These findings provide insight into the positive correlation between the metabolism and cardiovascular disorders and the presence of the T allele by means of a recessive model of DBH rs1611115 polymorphism with the suspensibility of dementia.

Secamone afzelii (Roem. & Schult.) K. Schum (family Asclepiadaceae) is a creeping woody climber used to treat ailments in many traditional medicine systems. The present study aims to examine the antioxidant and enzyme inhibition activities of S. afzelii leaf using different compositions of methanol-water mixture as an extraction solvent. The extracts were characterized by HPLC-ESI-MSn in terms of chemical compounds. The in silico results show that compound 23 (quercitrin) has the higher docking scores among the selected substances and the MD simulation revealed that the interactions with the enzymatic pocket are stable over the simulation time and strongly involve the tyrosinase catalytic Cu atoms. All together the results showed that both 80% and 100% methanolic extracts contained significantly (p < 0.05) the highest total phenolics content while the highest content of total flavonoids was significantly (p < 0.05) extracted by 100% methanol. About 26 compounds were tentatively identified by HPLC-ESI-MSn and 6 of them were quantified using standards. Results showed that the extracts were rich in flavonoids with a relatively high abundance of two kaempferol glycosides comprising 60% of quantified compounds. The 100% and 80% methanol extracts recorded significantly (p < 0.05) the highest total antioxidant, DPPH and ABTS activity as well as tyrosinase and ⍺-amylase inhibitory activities. The best significant (p < 0.05) cholinesterase inhibitory activity and reducing capacity of Fe+++ and Cu++ was recorded from the 80% methanolic extract while 100% ethanolic extract gave the highest significant (p < 0.05) butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory activity. The best glucosidase activity was observed in the 50% and 80% methanolic extracts. Although the water extract displayed the least total phenolics and flavonoids content and consequently the lowest antioxidant and enzyme inhibition activity, it displayed significantly (p < 0.05) the highest chelating power. In conclusion, these results demonstrated the richness of S. afzelii leaf as a potential source of bioactive compounds for the food industry, for the preparation of food supplements and functional foods.

Since the Bosniak cysts classification is highly reader-dependent, automated tools based on radiomics could help in the diagnosis of the lesion. This study is an initial step in the search for radiomic features that may be good classifiers of benign-malignant Bosniak cysts in machine learning models. A CCR phantom was used through five CT scanners. Registration was performed with ARIA software, while Quibim Precision was used for feature extraction. R software was used for the statistical analysis. Robust radiomic features based on repeatability and reproducibility criteria were chosen. Excellent correlation criteria between different radiologists during lesion segmentation were imposed. With the selected features, their classification ability in benignity-malignity terms was assessed. From the phantom study, 25.3% of the features were robust. For the study of inter-observer correlation (ICC) in the segmentation of cystic masses, 82 subjects were prospectively selected, finding 48.4% of the features as excellent regarding concordance. Comparing both datasets, 12 features were established as repeatable, reproducible, and useful for the classification of Bosniak cysts and could serve as initial candidates for the elaboration of a classification model. With those features, the Linear Discriminant Analysis model classified the Bosniak cysts in terms of benignity or malignancy with 88.2% accuracy.

Usually, after an abnormal level of serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) or digital rectal exam, men undergo a prostate needle biopsy. However, the traditional sextant technique misses 15-46% of cancers. At present, there are problems regarding disease diagnosis/prognosis, especially in patients' classification, because the information to be handled is complex and challenging to process. Matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) have high expression by prostate cancer (PCa) compared with benign prostate tissues. To assess the possible contribution to the diagnosis of PCa, we evaluated the expression of several MMPs in prostate tissues before and after PCa diagnosis using machine learning, classifiers, and supervised algorithms. A retrospective study was conducted on 29 patients diagnosed with PCa with previous benign needle biopsies, 45 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BHP), and 18 patients with high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (HGPIN). An immunohistochemical study was performed on tissue samples from tumor and non-tumor areas using specific antibodies against MMP -2, 9, 11, and 13, and the tissue inhibitor of MMPs -3 (TIMP-3), and the protein expression by different cell types was analyzed to which several automatic learning techniques have been applied. Compared with BHP or HGPIN specimens, epithelial cells (ECs) and fibroblasts from benign prostate biopsies before the diagnosis of PCa showed a significantly higher expression of MMPs and TIMP-3. Machine learning techniques provide a differentiable classification between these patients, with greater than 95% accuracy, considering ECs, being slightly lower when considering fibroblasts. In addition, evolutionary changes were found in paired tissues from benign biopsy to prostatectomy specimens in the same patient. Thus, ECs from the tumor zone from prostatectomy showed higher expressions of MMPs and TIMP-3 compared to ECs of the corresponding zone from the benign biopsy. Similar differences were found for expressions of MMP-9 and TIMP-3, between fibroblasts from these zones. The classifiers have determined that patients with benign prostate biopsies before the diagnosis of PCa showed a high MMPs/TIMP-3 expression by ECs, so in the zone without future cancer development as in the zone with future tumor, compared with biopsy samples from patients with BPH or HGPIN. Expression of MMP -2, 9, 11, and 13, and TIMP-3 phenotypically define ECs associated with future tumor development. Also, the results suggest that MMPs/TIMPs expression in biopsy tissues may reflect evolutionary changes from prostate benign tissues to PCa. Thus, these findings in combination with other parameters might contribute to improving the suspicion of PCa diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery seeks to improve surgical care outcomes and equity for the world population through 6 indicators outlined in its 2030 Global Surgery Report. Our study aimed to estimate the percentage of the Mexican population with access to surgical care within the 2-hour distance range (indicator 1), the surgical workforce density (indicator 2), and the number of surgical procedures performed per 100,000 inhabitants (indicator 3) during the year 2020. Knowing these indicators can help to design and implement policies to increase surgical care access coverage and equity in our country. METHODS: Data related to population distribution, local referral hospitals, and surgical volume were obtained from the 2020 Mexican National Census. Information relating to hospital characteristics and surgical specialists was collected from the Secretariat of Health's public records. We calculated travel time between health care facilities and municipalities using the TrueWay Matrix API and R Studio. RESULTS: Taking into consideration the health care system affiliation, the proportion of the Mexican population with timely access to essential surgery was 81.7%, with 29.3 specialists per 100,000 inhabitants and 726.9 annual procedures performed per 100,000 inhabitants. We identified clusters of municipalities where a low proportion of the population has timely access to essential surgery. CONCLUSION: These findings illustrate that changes in Mexican policy are required to facilitate more equitable and timely access to essential surgical care among the population.

Moringa oleifera has been reported to possess a high number of bioactive compounds; hence, several food supplements are commercially available based on it. This work aimed to analyze the phytochemical composition and antioxidant activity of commercial food supplements. The phenolic composition of methanolic extracts was determined by using high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array and electrospray ionization mass spectrometric detection (HPLC-DAD-ESI-MSn), and the antioxidant activity was assessed by ABTS·+ and DPPH assays. Thirty-three compounds were identified, and all the main compounds were quantified, observing that the main contribution to the phenolic profile was due to kaempferol and quercetin glucosides. The antioxidant activity in both assays agreed with the phenolic content: the higher the phenolic levels, the higher the antioxidant activity. The obtained results were compared with those previously published regarding Moringa oleifera leaves to establish the potential benefits of food supplement consumption in the diet.

BACKGROUND: Retrospective studies suggest that coronavirus disease (COVID-19) commonly involves gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and complications. Our aim was to prospectively evaluate GI manifestations in patients hospitalized for COVID-19. METHODS: This international multicentre prospective cohort study recruited COVID-19 patients hospitalized at 31 centres in Spain, Mexico, Chile, and Poland, between May and September 2020. Patients were followed-up until 15 days post-discharge and completed comprehensive questionnaires assessing GI symptoms and complications. A descriptive analysis as well as a bivariate and multivariate analysis were performer using binary logistic regression. p<0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Eight hundred twenty-nine patients were enrolled; 129 (15.6%) had severe COVID-19, 113 (13.7%) required ICU admission, and 43 (5.2%) died. Upon admission, the most prevalent GI symptoms were anorexia (n=413; 49.8%), diarrhoea (n=327; 39.4%), nausea/vomiting (n=227; 27.4%), and abdominal pain (n=172; 20.7%), which were mild/moderate throughout the disease and resolved during follow-up. One-third of patients exhibited liver injury. Non-severe COVID-19 was associated with ≥2 GI symptoms upon admission (OR 0.679; 95% CI 0.464-0.995; p=0.046) or diarrhoea during hospitalization (OR 0.531; 95% CI 0.328-0.860; p=0.009). Multivariate analysis revealed that worse hospital outcomes were not independently associated with liver injury or GI symptoms. CONCLUSION: GI symptoms were more common than previously documented, and were mild, rapidly resolved, and not independently associated with COVID-19 severity. Liver injury was a frequent complication in hospitalized patients not independently associated with COVID-19 severity.

Chemical fingerprints in otoliths are commonly used as natural habitat markers in fishes. Alternatively, the first dorsal fin spine can provide valuable chemical information and may be more suitable for studying (i) endangered fish species that cannot be sacrificed for their otoliths or (ii) fishes for which otoliths might not be available because of management or commercial reasons. Here, we studied multi-element chemistry of fin spine edges collected from Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT; Thunnus thynnus) (Linnaeus, 1758) to investigate the utility of the fin spine edge as a natural habitat marker. We determined stable isotopic δ18O and δ13C ratios, as well as concentrations of the tracer elements Mg, Mn, Li, Ba, and Sr, at the edge of ABFT fin spines, and then we used these measures to discriminate ABFT individuals among capture regions (i.e., the eastern Atlantic Ocean or Mediterranean Sea). Isotope ratios and tracer element concentrations, and especially a combined multi-element approach, were able to effectively discriminate individuals by capture region. The Mg, Mn, Li, and δ18O concentrations were the strongest variables driving this discrimination. Overall, our results demonstrate that chemical signatures are consistently retained in the ABFT fin spine edge and support the use of fin spine edges for discerning habitat use. The fin spine chemistry as a minimally invasive sampling method, combined with otolith chemistry, genetic markers, and tagging efforts can help us to reconstruct fish movements, providing a deeper understanding of the spatial population dynamics of this iconic fish species.

In this study, the methanolic and infusion extracts of two species, Thymbra capitata and Thymus sipyleus subsp. rosulans, were tested for their chemical composition and biological abilities (antioxidant, enzyme inhibitory and anti-inflammatory effects). The extracts yielded total phenolic and flavonoid contents in the range of 83.43-127.52 mg GAE/g and 9.41-46.34 mg RE/g, respectively. HPLC analysis revealed rosmarinic acid to be a major component of the studied extracts (15.85-26.43%). The best ABTS radical scavenging ability was observed in the methanol extract of T. capitata with 379.11 mg TE/g, followed by in the methanol extract of T. sipylus (360.93 mg TE/g). In the CUPRAC assay, the highest reducing ability was also found in the methanol extract of T. capitata with 802.22 mg TE/g. The phosphomolybdenum ability ranged from 2.39 to 3.61 mmol TE/g. In terms of tyrosinase inhibitory effects, the tested methanol extracts (83.18-89.66 mg KAE/g) were higher than the tested water extracts (18.74-19.11 mg KAE/g). Regarding the BChE inhibitory effects, the methanol extracts were active on the enzyme while the water extracts showed no inhibitory effect on it. Overall, the methanolic extracts showed better enzyme inhibition compared to the infusion extracts. Molecular docking also showed the selected exhibited potential binding affinities with all enzymes, with a preference for cholinesterases. Additionally, the extracts were effective in attenuating the LPS-induced increase in COX-2 and IL-6 gene expression in isolated colon, thus indicating promising anti-inflammatory effects. The preliminary results of this study suggest that these species are good natural sources of antioxidants and also provide some scope as enzyme inhibitors, most likely due to their bioactive contents such as phenolic acids, and thus can be exploited for different applications related to health promotion and disease prevention.
